Myth: “Build it and they will come”

A quick Google search will reveal that the quote is always misquoted. Also, many communicators, business owners, artists, and marketers seem to quote this as meaning you can just make something and people will somehow find it. Yes, making something is good, but it doesn’t stop there — working on a plan to get attention is a must. Never fall for this quote and post YouTube videos without a distribution plan. Never “post and pray.” There are lots of tutorials about this out there. Google them!

“Over the past few years, I’ve heard way too many people misuse the famous quote from the 1989 film Field of Dreams, declaring, “If you build it, he will come.” This misappropriated quote suggests that if you simply put your head down and develop a great idea or build a fantastic product, people will eventually recognize it and come to you. It also implies that reaching out to people with your idea or project is not only unnecessary, but also beneath you.” — Captivology: The Science of Capturing People's Attention by Ben Parr
